Top 7 Best Laptop for Streaming Netflix
Competent Internet Connection
If we’re talking about streaming online videos and watching Netflix, you definitely need a capable and fast Internet connection inside your house.
I bet you want to enjoy your Netflix streaming without a bit of stutter, don’t you?
Hence I suggest getting at least a 5Mbps internet connection or a recommended of 8Mbps connection for smooth streaming of 1080p videos without hiccups.
On the other hand, you may receive Public Wifi Signal in your house that shows speed of over 100Mbps on speedtest.net.
However, in reality, it will only offer a fraction of a fraction of that speed due to multiple devices connected to it.
Moreover, watching Netflix on your mobile data plan won’t make sense because streaming videos will use up your month’s full of data in less than an hour.
Stronger and Wider Range Wifi Router
Considering that you have a speedy internet connection, coupling it with a capable router is necessary as well.
If you live in a studio or 2-room apartment, any Wifi router under $25 will suffice (my recommendation), however, if you live in a bigger house or a house spanning multiple floors, you’ll need a bigger, badder and faster router, which cost upward of $100.
The reason being, if you receive poor Wifi signal, you’ll also receive poor internet connection to your device.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to spend over $100 and have an existing Wifi Router, you can get a Wifi Repeater (also known as Wifi Range Extender) and enjoy excellent signal strength for under $25.
Longer Battery Life
I personally hate using my laptop when it is connected to the charging cable, and I believe same will be the situation with most of you.
Moreover, it is also kind of irritating, when you’re in the middle of an intense episode and the laptop starts indicating ‘Battery Low’ and switches off after few minutes, leaving you high and dry of what’s next to come.
Hence keeping this in mind, I’ve only selected laptops that offer close to 8 hours of battery life while streaming videos on full charge.
This way, you can complete an entire TV series of 8-10 episodes or watch 2-3 movies back to back in one go.
Though there’s one laptop in this list that only offers 4 hours of battery, however considering its price to performance ratio, I felt it to be a steal of a price for you.
What’s up with the Screen Size?
If you’re looking for the best laptop for streaming Netflix, screen size is of the utmost importance, any given day.
However if your only purpose is to watch Netflix, our eyes can get used to any screen size, be it an 11” or 17” laptop, once it becomes a habit.
For singular watching, a laptop screen size between 11”, 13” and 14” will be sufficient, however for watching as a couple, anything above 14” will be ideal.
To Chromebook, or not to Chromebook?
For people who need laptop for only streaming Netflix and other online videos, Chromebooks are one of the best options because they are:
- Cheap in price
- Light in Weight
- Provide longer Battery Life
- Are Extremely Portable
- Can be used to run Netflix Android App to Download Videos for Offline Viewing
However comparing it to a Windows-based Laptop or Mac-based laptop (for this instance), the Chromebooks are limited in functionality; they have very limited storage (from 16-64GB) and most of them can’t be upgraded as well.
Hence if you pinpoint on a Chromebook, make sure you’re only going to use it for Netflix streaming or if you need the best cheap laptop for Word Processing and Internet use.
If you’re a college student or working professional and need a laptop for use other than Netflix, getting a Windows-based laptop will be an ideal choice.
In this list, where we are only talking about the best laptop for streaming Netflix, I’ve included a couple of Chromebooks that are great options.
Moving on, here are the Top 7 Best Laptop for Streaming Netflix
#1: LG Gram 13″
This is the 2nd most expensive laptop in our list of best laptop for watching Netflix.
Most of you won’t need to shell out up to $1000 for streaming online videos; however, with all the features and quirks this laptop provides, you’ll know why I featured it here.
Earlier I had featured the 15.6” sub-$2000 LG Gram in my list of best laptop for Ableton; while this is a smaller 13.3” version that is bound to blow your mind.
First and foremost, LG isn’t a household brand when it comes to laptops, and this is the first laptop series they’ve launched in over a decade.
But they shocked the whole world when the first-gen LG Gram was launched, and now with cooler upgrades, we have the 2018 edition.
As I mentioned earlier, battery life is the most crucial factor in choosing a laptop for online streaming, and LG Gram provides plenty of it.
It offers a whopping 22 hours of battery (brand claimed) on full charge; however in real life, you can expect 15-17 hours on moderate and with heavy usage, 10-12 hours is the sweet spot.
While watching Netflix, you can expect a battery life of 10-12 hours depending on your screen brightness.
This is more than enough to watch an entire series of 8-10 episodes at one go.
Another thing that makes this laptop stand out is its weight.
The LG Gram 13.3” is extraordinarily lightweight and weighs only 2.13 lbs (965g) out of the box.
Even with such a low weight, the laptop is quite sturdy and feels rigid, due to the use of Magnesium alloy.
Hence you won’t need a laptop stand or table to keep this laptop on during your marathon Netflix streaming sessions.
On the technical front; the laptop features a power-efficient Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Backlit Keyboard and a Full HD IPS 13.3” screen with thin bezels on the sides.
Although I do want to mention that you can find better spec’d laptop at lower and similar price of LG Gram 13”, however, the quirks it offers, it is hard to resist not buying it.
Moreover, if you’re a college student, this laptop will be an excellent fit for all your needs and requirements.
Acer Chromebook 14 is my favorite choice when it comes to the best laptop for streaming Netflix at a low price.
For a price of just from $259.00, this Chromebook 14 is a cheap and reliable option for online streaming.
With a screen size of 14”, it’s an optimum size for watching videos without straining or squinting your eyes.
The laptop is built entirely out of Aluminum, which keeps its weight low at 3.42 pounds and feels very sturdy at the same time.
For the price, Acer managed to put in a 14” Full HD LED-Backlit IPS Display that has excellent viewing angle and delightful to look at.
However, since it’s a Chromebook, you don’t get powerful specifications under the hood.
It features a reasonably capable 1.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Celeron N3160 processor, which is one of the best processor for streaming video online.
Coupled with it is a 4GB Low Powered DDR3 RAM, 32GB of inbuilt storage and 100GB of additional storage via Google Drive.
It would have been appreciative if Acer had included an external SD card slot to increase real-time memory storage.
What makes the Acer Chromebook 14 unique is that it can run Android and Linux application; this means you can stream videos via the official Netflix Android App.
The Netflix Android App allows you to download Movies and TV series for offline viewing, which is not possible via browser or on Windows laptop.
Additional features include Intel HD Graphics, stereo speakers, 802.11ac Wifi (Dual Band), Bluetooth 4.2, 2x USB 3.0 ports, HDMI port and 720p HD Webcam.
To say the least, the Acer Chromebook 14 is not only a great laptop for Netflix streaming, but also one of the best cheap laptop for Word Processing and Internet Browsing.
However don’t expect much from it, as it is only meant for limited purposes, due to its limiting hardware and limiting Operating Software as well.
Let’s say, just in case, you’re not happy with the previously mentioned Acer Chromebook 14, and you want more features, powerful processor and convertible design.
I present to you, the Asus Chromebook Flip!
Asus, as we all know is a popular Laptop maker that releases a slew of good-looking laptops every year.
The Asus Chromebook Flip is no exception either.
Weighing at just 2.65 pounds, Asus managed to put in a powerful Intel Core M3 processor, which is Intel’s latest line of mobile-based CPUs for Chromebooks and other low-priced laptops.
Alongside, you get a 4GB RAM, 64GB inbuilt storage, microSD slot, 12.5” Full HD Touch Screen, Corning Gorilla Glass, Full-Metal Body and a slew of other features as well.
Just like Acer Chromebook 14, you too can access Android apps on the C302 to install the Netflix app and enjoy offline viewing. 100GB of extra space is also offered by Google.
A critical feature about Asus Chromebook Flip C302 is the flip screen, which allows the screen to be flipped 360-degrees.
This allows it to used as a tablet or kept in tent mode to enjoy watching Netflix with optimum ease.
Since you’ll be using this laptop for online video streaming, battery life is an important factor too, and Asus hasn’t skimped on that.
The Asus Chromebook Flip C302 offers a real-life battery endurance of 8 hours on full charge, which is ideal enough and makes it the best Chromebook for Netflix.
Let me be honest with you!
The previously mentioned Asus Chromebook Flip C302 was a definitive upgrade over the Acer Chromebook 14, however for a price of under $500, there are better options available as well.
And one of the options is the Lenovo Ideapad 330 17IKB.
And it’s a mammoth 17.3” laptop, though with an off-putting 1600 x 900 resolution display.
Now the guideline I set for this list is only to include laptops with a Full HD display, however, after seeing the specification, features and design this laptop offers, I really felt it to be a steal deal.
For a price of less than $500, you get an extremely powerful and efficient 8th-gen Intel Core i5-8250U processor, coupled with a blazing fast 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD Writer, Bluetooth, Type-C USB and preinstalled Windows 10.
Comparing it to Asus Chromebook Flip C302, the Lenovo Ideapad 330 17IKB is a complete steal.
Even the processor in Ideapad 330 is twice as fast as the C302, with double the RAM and boat load of storage at the same price, along with Windows 10 and a humongous 17-inch display.
Moreover, not only is the Ideapad 330 powerful on the inside, but it looks incredibly cool on the outside too with a proportionally placed chiclet keyboard with number pad and an ideal size touchpad with an abundance of space to rest your palms while typing.
However, where the Lenovo Ideapad 330 fails is its huge size and low battery life.
Definitely, the 17.3” screen will be a joy to watch Netflix on it, but bigger laptops reduce portability.
Also, you only get a meager 4-hours of battery life, which really isn’t enough, however, if you can connect the laptop to a power source and use Netflix, you really won’t feel any trouble at all.
Honestly, all the 4 laptops I mentioned above had some kind of quirks to them, multiple advantages and few disadvantages too.
All of the laptops had a varying price point.
However, if you don’t want fancy quirks and need just a traditional price at an inexpensive price point, then the Acer Aspire E5-576-392H is the ideal pick of the lot.
Priced under $400, this 15.6” laptop houses 8th-gen Intel Core i3-8130U processor, 6GB RAM and 1TB Hard Disk, which is an ideal specification for a primary laptop suitable for watching Netflix on a budget.
Not only that, it offers battery life over 12 hours with a full HD display along with pre-installed Windows 10 OS.
For the price and features it offers, this Acer Aspire laptop is a complete steal. However to improve its performance you can swap the 2GB memory stick with a 4GB stick for an additional $25.
Alongside, with the provided M.2 SATA slot, you can add a faster and efficient 500GB SSD to increase the laptop’s performance for an extra $100.
In case you get tired of Netflixing every day, with the mentioned upgrades you can play games like Fortnite at low to medium settings.
The Spin series from Acer features a slew of 2-in-1 laptops that look like a traditional laptop but has a touch screen and can be flipped 360-degree to use as a tablet or can be kept in tent mode while watching movies.
Priced just over $500, the laptop offers a well performing Intel Core i5-7200U processor, coupled with a faster and bigger 12GB DDR4 RAM; however it is bottle-necked by a slower 5400RPM 1TB Hard Disk.
This is an excellent laptop; however, for a faster day to day performance, you can swap the 1TB HDD with a 500GB SSD under $100.
Since it’s one of the best laptop for streaming videos, you get a beautiful, bright and vibrant 15.6” Full-HD IPS display, which is a joy for daily use.
It features a 4-cell 3220mAh Lithium-Ion battery, which is capable of keeping the laptop alive for 7-8 hours on full charge.
Additionally, it features a backlit keyboard as well that offers keyboard visibility while using the laptop at night, without trying to guess what keys you are pressing or without using your smartphone’s flashlight.
There are two in-built stereo speakers and really aren’t something to talk about much; hence you’re better off using a headphone or Bluetooth speaker.
What’s more the laptop has to offer is a secure SD Card Reader, HD Webcam, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0 along with HDMI.
#7: Lenovo Flex 5
If you’ve bought the Netflix’s Ultra HD plan and want to make full use of it, getting a 4K UHD Laptop seems to be a logical choice.
Though beforehand; I do want to mention that the Lenovo Flex 5 is the costliest laptop in our list of best laptop for streaming Netflix.
However, for the price, it is powerfully spec’d as well.
It comes with the latest Intel Core i5-7500U processor, which is coupled with a 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 2GB Nvidia Geforce 940MX graphics and a mammoth 15.6” 4K LED-backlit IPS display that offers battery life of 8 hours.
I do want to mention that 4K displays are a battery guzzler and hence the couple of 4K laptops that are priced under $1000 have miserable battery life.
Just like the other 3 laptops on our list, the Lenovo Flex 5 is also a 2-in-1 laptop that comes with a touchscreen and can be used as a tablet too.
Weighing at 4.41 pounds, the laptop isn’t the lightest of the lot, hence using it as a tablet can be a cumbersome affair.
However, as a traditional laptop, it can be carried around easily in a backpack.
For a laptop of this size, the heat sink is of unusually big, hence during extensive use, you can feel the heat on your lap.
It comes with a backlit keyboard and Fingerprint reader.
Additional features include 2x USB 3.0, USB Type-C, Card Reader, HDMI, Bluetooth 4.1, and Harman Audio Tech based stereo speakers.
|LG Gram 13″||2.13 lbs||10-12 hours|
|Acer Chromebook 14||3.42 lbs||10 hours|
|Asus Chromebook Flip C302||2.65 lbs||8 hours|
|Lenovo Ideapad 330 17IKB||6.61 lbs||4 hours|
|Acer Aspire E5-576-392H||5.27 lbs||12 hours|
|Acer Spin 3 SP315||4.74 lbs||7-8 hours|
|Lenovo Flex 5||4.41 lbs||8 hours|
Few Last Words Before you Leave…
Now that you’ve reached till here, I bet that you would have enjoyed this articles and the laptop that I mentioned.
I have spent over 48 hours, compiling this list, going over 100’s of laptops, their specifications, online review and videos, to make sure that you make a perfect purchase decision.
All the laptops mentioned here are mostly ready-to-use, and you don’t want to upgrade anything before you start using them.
Confused between Windows and Chromebooks? If your use is mainly watching online videos, internet surfing, word processing, then Chromebooks will suffice, however, if the purpose is anything more than that or you need a couple of softwares available on Windows, then buying a Windows-based laptop is a logical choice.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments section, I will be happy to answer all your queries.
