Many people think that a matte screen is different compared to a simple glossy screen. The truth is; you can clean it as easily as a traditional screen. It’s OK to use the same products to clean matte screens.
In this article; we’ll cover some popular and efficient methods in cleaning a matte laptop screen.
Once that’s done, I’ve mentioned few products for a professional cleaning process.
Are you ready?
Let’s get started!
How to Clean a Matte Laptop Screen?
By superficial cleaning, I do not mean a process that won’t get rid of the dirt on your laptop’s screen. Instead, it’s a cleaning process, which works best only in the case of less dirty screens. If your matte monitor looks like a mess, you should try the second method, described later in the article. That method includes an additional important step.
So, this first process is pretty simple. First, let’s list all the things you need to clean your matte screen:
- Microfiber cloth
- Distilled Water
Yes, that’s all you need. I already told you it’s quite simple. Now, I’ll walk you through this process:
In case you do not know what is distilled water, then please read this informative guide: 3 Ways to Make Distilled Water
First of all, shut down the laptop, and decouple the power adapter. This step might seem like a no-brainer, but you shouldn’t jump over it. If you forget to shut down the laptop and decouple the power cable, you could damage the device. That is because we’ll work using a little bit of distilled water. So, don’t forget to do this step.
Now, if you’ve got your laptop ready, get some clean water and the microfiber cloth. It’s of utmost importance that you won’t use anything else than a microfiber cloth. Especially not some piece of paper or tissue. Any of these materials could scratch the laptop’s screen, even if it’s matte. If you don’t want that to happen, buy a microfiber cloth.

The next step is to water the fabric. Don’t put water on the screen, you might damage internal components.
When you’ve got the cloth wet (not too much), wipe the surface of the screen. Don’t apply too much pressure. Do this many times. The dirt and other small particles will come off quickly, and your screen will look as good as new.
When you’re done, just do this once more, with a dry cloth to remove the remaining water.
The method described from here on is for those who have seriously filthy laptop screens.
But don’t worry, it isn’t anything too complicated. Just follow the steps, and you’ll manage to clean your matte screen easily.
If the screen has a lot of dirt deposited on it, first you must blow off as much as you can. This is actually the most critical step. If you don’t do it, cleaning the screen while a lot of dirt is still on it, could heavily scratch it. It won’t matter if you use a microfiber cloth. All the dust and small particles will give birth to new marks.
Once the surplus of dust and dirt is blown away, you can move on and do the same process that we did previously in the first method. There is one difference though:
Before we used pure, clean water to get the screen cleaned. This time, when the monitor is even uglier, you should use a special lotion created to clean matte screens. Just using water isn’t enough.
Such a product is designed to work best with matte laptop screens. But it’s also usable with smartphones and TVs. There are many types of products used to clean a laptop screen. One of the best and most efficient is the cleaning gel. This is a particular compound created to protect the screen from all kinds of dust particles.
It is better than a standard liquid product because once you wipe the screen with the microfiber cloth dipped in this gel, it will stick to the screen, no matter if it’s matte or not. This way, the gel is protecting your screen from getting dirty too quickly again.
Of course, the process is all the same, as I already pointed out. It won’t differ too much no matter what product you use. The main idea is, to clean the screen entirely and make sure the gel covers all the surface, even if it isn’t dirty everywhere.
One more thing: when you’re done, you don’t have to wipe the screen with a dry cloth too. The gel (or part of it), could come off if you clean with a dry cloth. So, do this part only with the first method.
The first product that I want to list here is called EcoMoist Natural Organic Screen Cleaner.
The price is reasonable, and it gets the job done. You won’t be disappointed with it.
The other product is from a company called Vius. It is widely used to clean all types of surfaces, so used on a matte laptop screen, will do just great. It isn’t overpriced either, so it’s affordable as well.
At the end of our article, you should have a pretty good idea of how a matte laptop screen is cleaned. If you have only slight dust on the screen, the cleaning is done very quickly. All you need is a microfiber cloth and some clean water. That should do the trick.
For more significant and uglier screens, it’s best if you use a special product. I listed 2 of the best products in the article. But don’t forget to blow off all the dust you can, before applying any cleaning gel or lotion on the screen. This way, you can protect it from further dirtying it.
